Zion National Park – Day 2

Zion National Park – Day 2

We had another busy day hiking in Zion NP, this time we decided to tackle one of the steeper walks and it was particularly hard going. Not as many miles covered today as our first day, but a LOT steeper to get to the top.

  • Total distance walked = 6.47 miles
  • Elevation change = 1000 foot

The walk took us up to ‘Scout Lookout’ which had great views down the valley. It was mostly an even path to get up there, but some sections were steep and zig-zagged back and forth. Beyond the point we got to is another section called ‘Angels Landing’ which you need a permit to climb, as it has a very narrow and dangerous path section with a chain fence you have to hang on to.

We didn’t fancy risking that, it looked a bit insane. Here’s a few pics below courtesy of Google to give you an idea what that bit is like!

It was a steep descent as well, but certainly less strenuous than the trip up

Here’s some more pics from the walk we actually did anyway…

We also drove to one of the other photo points called ‘Big Bend’ which was at the bottom of the valley from where we’d just climbed up. That canyon wall behind Lucy in the first photo where she’s looking at the sign is the one we were just on the top of!

We had a lazier afternoon after the walk at our local coffee place, the same place we had beer and pizza when we arrived which has sort of become our regular spot as it’s nearby to where we’re staying and does really nice food and drink.

Off out again today for some further walking on our last day in Zion, before we travel to Bryce Canyon for our next stop tomorrow.

  1. Not surprised you didn’t cover the same distance as the day before. Those gradients look really punishing! Well done for getting as far as you did even if you did chicken out of the chain section at Angels Landing. I’ll get Alan Lovegrove to give you a few tips on steep ascents! Himalayas in 2026 perhaps?
