Buckle up!

Buckle up!

We had a really fun day in Whistler today marking the end of our stay here. I will tell you about it in reverse as the afternoon activity we undertook was by far the most enjoyable and exhilarating part of the day.

This was another recommendation from Sarah and Tom, but unlike the Grouse Grind experience this is something we would definitely want to do again. Ha ha. And what was it?…well here’s a picture to start with which gives you a clue (well more than a clue). I promise you that that is us under there!

The official title of the experience was the ‘Odyssey Off-road Buggy Tour’. After a short minibus ride into the mountains, you get your own 4×4 buggy and after a short lesson in how to drive it, you’re off! The guide leads you and the other buggies as you climb up rugged mountain roads and forest trails up to scenic viewpoints. You get to test the sturdiness of the buggy through creeks and over boulders. It is so bumpy that you are constantly leaving your seat and getting thrown about.

This was the view from the highest point we got too, and a few of us posing next to the vehicle obviously.

It was really good fun though and we paid a bit extra so we could both sample the driving. Because there hasn’t been any rain for ages it was really dusty too so we had to wear balaclavas under our helmets to keep the dust out of our faces. Our clothes were covered by the time we’d finished mind.

Near the end of the driving you have to “clean” the vehicles, and I don’t mean clean in the normal sense. No, clean here means driving through giant puddles / streams at speed so the vehicle (and the occupants) can get wet. The faster you risked going the more wet you got. Again great fun.

All in all we would highly recommend this experience to anyone. There are so many activities and experiences to choose from here in Whistler it was hard to decide on what to do. But after ruling out the likes of ‘Whistler Bungee’ and ‘Whistler Zipline’ very quickly, and with this coming recommended, we settled on this, and we were glad we did.

p.s. Kev, our instructor looked like Butter Bean!

Cheakamus Lake

So, that was the second part of the day covered. The morning saw us hike the Cheakamus lake trail. Upon leaving the main highway you had to take this dirt road which seemed to go on forever, it got to a point where we began to wonder if we were actually on the right road. Fortunately we were and the car park and trailhead were in sight. Phew! After trekking through the forest you are rewarded with great views of the lake, and again the colour was stunning.

We move on to Merritt tomorrow so more from us in a few days.
