Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park

We’ve spent the last couple of days in an area called Revelstoke, adjacent to two different National Parks – Mount Revelstoke NP and Glacier NP. It was a couple of hours drive from Vernon where we’d been staying before, but lots to do here in a short visit.

On the day we arrived we checked in to our Airbnb a bit early around lunch time, and then headed out to Mount Revelstoke which is right near town. In the summer you can usually drive right up to the summit area, but unfortunately the conditions were still quite icy up high and so the road was only partially open, about half way. We did a couple of hikes at lower altitude though in the ‘Lower Mount Revelstoke’ region.

This included the ‘Soren Sorensen trail’, a 5km loop around a woodland area, and then we drove up the mountain about as far as we were allowed to some view points (a bit cloudy unfortunately to see the mountain tops) and to see the old ski slope that has been used in the past for competition.

On the way back home we stopped at Mt Begbie Brewing Co for a few drink samplers and nachos:

On our second day we drove to Glacier National Park, stopping at the visitors centre for some suggestions and then doing various hikes in the area, and on our way back towards town / home. It started to rain in the early afternoon so we couldn’t stay out as long as we’d hoped, but we mainly dodged it while we were out.

The ‘Bear Creek Falls’ (above) were really impressive, a short but steep hike down in to the valley to a really nice waterfall. Ne bears thankfully.

Then we did the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ loop hike, taking you to a point where the waters from Illecillewaet River and Asulkan Brook meet.

We then did the ‘Loop Brook Trail’ which loops through the woods and past loads of old stone supports for the old railway system that used to pass through the mountains in this area. This is where it started to rain quite heavily as we made our way back to the car.

Our last walk was a short walk through the ‘Cedars Boardwalk’ before we headed back to our Airbnb for a lazier afternoon.
We move on today to our next destination which is Clearwater, en route to the Rockies and Jasper in a couple of days’ time.

Let’s hope that rain is not an indicator to what you can expect as you head towards the Rockies! Keep your waterproofs handy.
