Our Eastern Canada/USA Highlights

Our Eastern Canada/USA Highlights

This will be the last post of our trip as we are flying home today, but here’s our personal highlights from the Eastern portion of the trip – following on from our Western highlights if you want to see those too. We had 9 stops in total and did so much, it was a bit hard to choose, but here you go. Lucy’s picks Best stop This was super tough to call as they’ve all been great, but for the…

Faire du vélo et boire dans l’eau (Cycling and drinks in the water)

Faire du vélo et boire dans l’eau (Cycling and drinks in the water)

On our final day in Quebec City we decided to rent some bikes from the Old Town area and cycle along one of the city’s many cycle paths, following the river up to some nearby water falls we had wanted to visit. It took us around an hour to cycle to Montmorency Falls on a pretty hot afternoon, but it was a pretty flat route and a good way to get around. The falls themselves were really impressive. We didn’t…

Grand Falls, Edmunston Botanical Gardens and a Closely-Fought Pool Tournament

Grand Falls, Edmunston Botanical Gardens and a Closely-Fought Pool Tournament

After a few days in Moncton, we broke up the long journey to Quebec City with a couple of nights stay in a place called Grand Falls. As the name suggests there is a large waterfalls here but as we arrived quite late in the afternoon we checked in at our motel (weird to not be in an Airbnb now!) and then headed out to a local pizza place for some food, before tracking down the only brewery in town….

Our Last Few Days in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Our Last Few Days in Halifax, Nova Scotia

We’ve spent the last 3 days in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the most easterly point of our Canadian trip. We had a pretty long 4 hour drive from our previous stop in Saint John to get here, but we had 3 full days to look around the area while we were here. On the way we made a brief stop at Rockwood State Park on the way out of Saint John which was a lovely park with a large lake and…

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park

We’ve spent the last couple of days in Acadia National Park as we make our way up the North East coast of the US and back towards Eastern Canada. We took a fairly scenic drive along the coast to get here from Portland, via some nice fishing villages and with a nice stop by a lake for lunch. Acadia National Park is spread out over quite a large area as you can see from the map above. We’re staying over…

Our Last Day in Boston and Arrival in Portland

Our Last Day in Boston and Arrival in Portland

We had quite a busy last day in Boston before we moved on to our next stop, which is where we are now, in Portland (Maine, not Portland Oregon). On our last day in Boston we went on a student-led historical tour of the Harvard University campus. It was an interesting hour-long tour around the campus, hearing the history of various buildings and the university as a whole, and getting to learn more about the whole place. Our guide was…

Our Western Canada Highlights

Our Western Canada Highlights

We did this on our last trip, and we thought it would be fun to try and do the same for each portion of our Canada trip too this time. Based on a defined list of categories, we’ve each independently thought of our highlights for our time in Western Canada. Some of them may end up being the same, but let’s see. Si’s Picks Best stop It’s a close call between Whistler and Banff but I think I’m going to…

The Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede

We’ve spent the last couple of days in Calgary on the last stop of our Canadian West Coast trip. We fly tomorrow from Calgary to Boston to start the East coast portion, and we’ve had a bit more of a chill out while we’ve been here in Calgary really to recover from all the hiking we’ve been doing. Our Airbnb is really nice and comfy so it’s been a nice place to hang out, it’s got a huge TV so…

An Amazing but Busy Day at Lake Louise

An Amazing but Busy Day at Lake Louise

After our long scenic drive to Banff yesterday (check it out if you missed that post), we spent our first day in the area visiting Lake Louise and the nearby Moraine Lake, two of the most famous and visited lakes in the Canadian Rockies. You can’t actually drive to these lakes, they’re so popular and Lake Louise only has a very small car park (which fills up by 5am for sunrise), and the road to Moraine Lake is blocked to…

Jasper, Mount Robson and Valemount

Jasper, Mount Robson and Valemount

After a few days in Clearwater we drove a couple of hours to our next stop which is in Valemount, an area a little outside of the well-known Jasper National Park. We are staying here to be near to the (apparently equally nice) Mount Robson Provincial Park and so we could stay somewhere a bit more remote and less busy than Jasper. We’ve got a really nice Airbnb cabin in the woods, it’s pretty massive for just the two of…
