Our Western Canada Highlights

Our Western Canada Highlights

We did this on our last trip, and we thought it would be fun to try and do the same for each portion of our Canada trip too this time. Based on a defined list of categories, we’ve each independently thought of our highlights for our time in Western Canada. Some of them may end up being the same, but let’s see. Si’s Picks Best stop It’s a close call between Whistler and Banff but I think I’m going to…

The Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede

We’ve spent the last couple of days in Calgary on the last stop of our Canadian West Coast trip. We fly tomorrow from Calgary to Boston to start the East coast portion, and we’ve had a bit more of a chill out while we’ve been here in Calgary really to recover from all the hiking we’ve been doing. Our Airbnb is really nice and comfy so it’s been a nice place to hang out, it’s got a huge TV so…

Banff and Yoho National Park

Banff and Yoho National Park

We have now arrived in Calgary for the last leg on the west coast and I am writing this whilst catching up with Wimbledon on the “small” TV in our new apartment. This post is a quick update on our last few days in and around Banff. After our busy day in Lake Louise we decided to take it a bit easier on the Tuesday, starting with a dip in one of their famous hot springs. We decided to go…

An Amazing but Busy Day at Lake Louise

An Amazing but Busy Day at Lake Louise

After our long scenic drive to Banff yesterday (check it out if you missed that post), we spent our first day in the area visiting Lake Louise and the nearby Moraine Lake, two of the most famous and visited lakes in the Canadian Rockies. You can’t actually drive to these lakes, they’re so popular and Lake Louise only has a very small car park (which fills up by 5am for sunrise), and the road to Moraine Lake is blocked to…

A Scenic Drive Along the Icefields Parkway

A Scenic Drive Along the Icefields Parkway

I am currently writing this post whilst on the shuttle bus ride back from our day at Lake Louise and Lake Moraine so watch out for Si’s post on that soon as the scenery was stunning and we’ve got loads of photos to share. It was hard to say goodbye to our unique cabin in the woods in Valemount after having such a comfortable stay there but Banff was calling which is the penultimate stop on the West. To get…

Jasper, Mount Robson and Valemount

Jasper, Mount Robson and Valemount

After a few days in Clearwater we drove a couple of hours to our next stop which is in Valemount, an area a little outside of the well-known Jasper National Park. We are staying here to be near to the (apparently equally nice) Mount Robson Provincial Park and so we could stay somewhere a bit more remote and less busy than Jasper. We’ve got a really nice Airbnb cabin in the woods, it’s pretty massive for just the two of…

Loads of Tassin’ Waterfalls

Loads of Tassin’ Waterfalls

We’ve been in Clearwater for the last few days. The journey here from Revelstoke was straightforward (just long) and when we arrived, after a pint in the hotel bar, we made for the nearby bbq and craft beer place. “The Sow” was the name of the 8 sampler beer flight we ordered. There were too many nice ones to choose from so we thought why not try them all. Unlike on previous stops we are staying in a hotel and…

Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park

Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park

We’ve spent the last couple of days in an area called Revelstoke, adjacent to two different National Parks – Mount Revelstoke NP and Glacier NP. It was a couple of hours drive from Vernon where we’d been staying before, but lots to do here in a short visit. On the day we arrived we checked in to our Airbnb a bit early around lunch time, and then headed out to Mount Revelstoke which is right near town. In the summer…

Biking in Myra Canyon and more…

Today we are moving on from Vernon, where we have been the past few days following our stay in Merritt. As the drive was only a few hours we decided to stop en route in a place called Kelowna, somewhere that was recommended by one of the bar staff in Vancouver actually. Kelowna is a small city in the Okanagan Valley and much of the central part is situated along Okanagan Lake, and is surrounded by parks and mountains –…

2 Days in Merritt

2 Days in Merritt

We’ve spent the last 2 days of our trip in a small town called Merritt which we used as a base to break up the long travel distances as we move across Western Canada. We were originally attracted to Merritt because it is promoted as the “country music capital of Canada”, although to be honest, there’s very little sign of that at all! They do have an annual country music festival, but that’s in August, and some murals of country…
