Durango and the Scenic Train Ride

Durango and the Scenic Train Ride

This post comes soon after Lucy’s about Mesa Verde national park so don’t miss that one too!

We are only staying in Durango, Colorado for one day and we had booked to go on a scenic train ride up in to the Rockies to a place called Cascade Canyon. This is an old narrow gauge steam train which has a variety of different carriages – we opted for the first class carriage (I think I can charge this to work expenses right, Gav?) with a glass panorama roof for the best views. Including unlimited coffee and soft drinks and various souvenirs

Often in the winter time there is loads of snow on this route, and Durango is a big winter sports town at this time of year. But there was actually not much snow around in the town, but quite a lot by the time we got up in to the mountains. The rivers were all frozen over too so it was very wintery by the time we reached Cascade Canyon.

Here’s a video from their official website showing you a bit more about what it’s like, followed by about a million photos we took today 🙂

We got back to Durango about 2.30pm and had a wander down their high street where there’s loads of shops, bars and restaurants. We stopped (of course) in one of the other local micro brewery’s here called ‘Carver Brewing Co.’ for a drink and a bit of food.

They have a random festival going on today (it’s Saturday) called Snow Down which seems to be an excuse for everyone to dress up like board game related things – we saw some chess pieces and a pack of cards – and then loads of the bars have random games going on. Only early signs of it when we were out in the early afternoon, but I expect it will be busy this evening.

We are leaving Durango tomorrow to drive the long route (about 5 hours) back in to Arizona to stay near Glen Canyon. We’ll be driving through Monument Valley as well on the way and then have a few days there.

  1. Train trip looked amazing, so jealous. Views from the carriage with the panoramic roof must have been amazing, good decision to go first class. The iced up rivers looked spectacularly surreal. Hope you put your beers at the end of the train ride on expenses too!
