Arriving in Vancouver

Arriving in Vancouver

Hi everyone, the blog is back! 🙂 We’ve just set off on our long 2 month trip around Canada and flew in to Vancouver on Monday. The airports at both ends were easy and quiet which was nice, and the flight was on time and “modest” at around 9hr30.

After waking up quite early due to the jet lag, we spent the first full day in Vancouver doing a lot of walking around the city. We are staying in an area called Richmond which is around 30 mins to downtown via the “Sky Train”. Our Airbnb is really nice too, nice and quiet and easy to get around.

We caught the train in to town, and then walked from there to Stanley Park which is a big green area in the city where you can walk around the outer edge of the park following the sea wall round for about 7 miles total. You get some really nice views of the city across the water, and the weather was really nice as you can see from the photos.

There were various things to see on the walk round including the “Girl in the Wetsuit” (which you can see perched on one of the rocks above) statue, which reminded us of the Little Mermaid statue when we visited Copenhagen.

The second half of the day involved following the “BC Ale Trail” (British Columbia Ale Trail) around the town, walking between various craft beer breweries and seeing the sites in between. We started at the ‘Stanley Park Brewing Co’ which was our favourite of the day, sat right in the park area with a really nice pub and terrace to sit out on in the sun. It also overlooked some tennis courts so we got to see some tennis!

We then followed the route shown on the map here in to town, calling at Steamworks Brewery:

Then from there (via some interesting things to see) we went to Yaletown Brewing Co:

Then from there we had to get a water taxi, the “aquabus” along the river to get to the next area which was Granville Island, a small area famous for a large indoor food market. The boat ride was good fun, just a small little taxi that takes you down the river in about 10 mins.

We got some AMAZING doughnuts on Granville Island from a place called Lee’s doughnuts…we’re trying to figure out a way to go back before we leave! I should mention that the exchange rate is really good in Canada too. It’s quite expensive in dollars (commonly $9 ish for a pint plus tax and tip), but it’s around 1.9 dollars to the pound, so it works out quite cheap eventually when things get converted back to pounds.

Our last pub stop of the day after being at Granville Island for a bit was a small local brewery called ‘August Brewing’, after which we walked back to get the train home. All in all we walked 14.16 miles that day, so we covered a lot of ground!

We’re in Vancouver for 3 full days so we’ll post another update soon.
